ALYSE GUENTHER
Alyse Guenther is a interdisciplinary artist and international video storyteller. Her process-based approach and community-focused practice uses art as a tool to connect communities across differences and provide opportunities for reflection and discussion of current social issues.
Guenther works in a variety of mediums including large-scale conceptual painting, photography, collage, mixed medium sculpture, and documentary film. She draws upon relationship as the priority to her practice, building intentional personal connections with both her artwork, conceptual subject matter and the her community which she involves.
Her paintings often defy typical renderings, aiming to defy expectations with the aesthetic. She juxtaposes sweeping gestures with precise detail, dramatic blasts of color with playful mark-making, to offer up as permission or example to breaking beyond conformity or expected social pretense.
Her video pieces focus on social justice storytelling, elevating marginalized experiences and advocating on issues of accessibility, equity, and diverse representation. She values subject-led storytelling, involving her subjects throughout the process to promote authenticity, transparency, and autonomy in the storytelling process. Her work have taken her across the globe, collaborating in South East Asia supporting local and international environmental nonprofits and filming a historical arts documentary in France.
